Planning a wedding can oftentimes seem daunting, even if you’re keeping it small and intimate. How can you make sure your wedding feels like you while also making it feel, well, cool? There are so many wedding ideas swirling and whirling out there, but we got the lowdown on what’s really hot in weddings and wedding planning right now.
One of the biggest trends overall? The rejection of societal expectations, according to Zola, with 83% of couples believing that at least one traditional expectation needs to change. So that being said — do you! Here, a taste of what’s big in weddings at the moment, and recommendations on how to incorporate them.
Live Music
Live music is becoming more popular, and even more accessible, especially for couples on a budget.
“No longer are the days when you need a nine-piece band for reception,” says Melanie Levin, wonder and principal planner of LuckEleven Events. “Many DJs and bands have created packages that incorporate two to three musicians playing alongside a DJ. This hybrid option makes it easier for couples to incorporate live entertainment without breaking the bank.”

Mismatched Wedding Party Looks
Personalization is key for 2024 weddings, with 82% of couples opting for mismatched wedding party outfits, according to Allison Cullman, wedding and registry expert at Zola. It can be seen in beautiful gradient-inspired bridesmaid looks or color themes without dress restrictions.
“This trend allows each member of the wedding party to showcase their unique style,” she says, “ensuring a more individualized and inclusive celebration. Coordinating ahead of time helps prevent any accidental matching.”
Color, Color, and More Color
Speaking of different colors, Levin notes that couples want more of it — often opting out of a neutral color palette. “Design-wise, many weddings are trending colorful! Think: tasteful rainbow color palettes, luscious florals, bold shades, and textured linens,” she says. “Many of my couples come to me saying they’ve seen the traditional white wedding so many times, they want to do something original now that it’s their time.”
Phone-Free Wedding Ceremonies
Despite heavy use of social media for wedding planning (86% of couples use it, according to Zola), couples prefer a phone-free environment on their big day. In fact, 75% of couples are requesting that guests refrain from posting on social media during the event.
“This ensures a more intimate and distraction-free experience, keeping the focus on the celebration rather than on Instagram stories,” says Cullman.
Banquette Seating and Retro-Inspired Venue Trends
Vinyl booths, intimate spaces, and corner seats that bring a sense of closeness will be seen more and more in receptions.
“This year we will be seeing more banquette seating incorporated into the layout. These upholstered banquettes make the space feel more like a restaurant than a wedding venue,” says Levin.
Destination Weddings — Yes, They’re Back and Bigger Than Ever
Speaking of the reception trends, destination weddings are officially “back,” with 36% of weddings in 2024 requiring guests to travel by plane, train, or a very long car ride. Couples are transforming their big day into a mini-vacation for both themselves and their guests, creating an unforgettable weekend for everyone, says Cullman.
